  • What is a remix?
  • A remix is a type of derivative work in which the the original song is transformed in some way to create a variation of the original. These transformations lead to a new musical work that is noticeably different from the original. A more detailed description can be found here.

  • How long can my remix be?
  • A remix can be up to 8 minutes in length. A song can be up to 7 minutes in length.

  • What are the remix rules?

  1. All samples used by the remixer must be cleared. That means the remixer must have the right to use the given sample. There are many places to get royalty free samples, like free sounds. If you use a sample from a library you own, this is usually fine, but you should check the license agreement of the given sample if you are unsure.
  2. Any and all styles of music are welcome. Feel free to make your remix any style you wish.
  3. Your version of the song must be noticeably different from the original. This means the remixer must add something to the remix that makes it special and different from the original. This does not mean the remix has to be completely transformative, however. How much of the original musical intent of the seed song is retained is up to the remixer.
  4. You may use any tool at your disposal. Use any software or hardware you like to make your remix.
  5. You may add new elements to the original song. This includes adding an accompanying part such as a melodic line, base line, or percussion. It is up to the remixer which key elements of the original are preserved and which ones are transformed.
  6. Have fun with it!

  • What is a remix kit?
  • A remix kit is a collection of samples that can be used to recreate a given piece of music. By using the remix kit someone should be able to recreate the song in whole or significant part.

  • What are stems?
  • Stems are the studio parts that make up the music. These are a collections of the core studio tracks of a recording. If the song is band, the stems may include the following stem parts; bass, drums, vocals, lead guitars, and rhythm guitars.

  • How do I upload a remix?
  • To upload a remix click on the Add Music link in the top most menu. Click on Remix. Use the form to enter the details of your remix and upload the files. You will need to upload a high quality file (an uncompressed wav or a high quality mp3), a preview mp3 (low quality mp3, 128 or 192). Optionally you can upload a remix kit or stems for your song. It is recommended that you add these optional files. The process of adding a song is very similar except you click on song on the My Content (Add Music) page.
