Electric Love Fest Invades UCLA

The electronic music festival has arrived on the college campus. Tonight's Electric Love Fest (ELF) is UCLA's first event of its kind (and hopefully a regular mainstay). ELF brings the atmosphere of other enormous Los Angeles events such as the pre-Halloween Monster Massive and the New Year's Eve celebration Together as One, and fits it into a campus hall. This event features local up-and-coming musical stylings of Jakkmode, UCLA's very own Color, and Universoul Religion.

DJ'n Continues Its Digital Journey

Some very notable new DJ hardware has popped up this year. Manufacturers like Stanton, Vestax and Numark continue to innovate in the digital DJ'n realm. Released late last year, Stanton's DaScratch is one of the best designed DJ controllers around. It is compact, flexible and responsive. NAMM was the first time I got to play with one and I fell in love. After I pay off the holidays I have to buy one, or three!

Software Highlights from NAMM

The big news on the software front had to be the announcement of Live 8 and Max for Live. This is a huge step forward in marrying to traditions of software creation. Live 8 has some nice incremental advantages to version 7, but the real innovation here is the support of Max for Live. Now composers from the programmatic and algorithmic front can take advantage of the Ableton workflow and easy to use signal chain. I'm very excited to get my hands on this software!

Recording Gear and Controllers at NAMM

NAMM probably has the largest collection of recording equipment, controllers, and instruments in North America. The AES show has an interesting and large collection of gear, but the NAMM show in Anaheim dwarfed the last AES show I saw in NYC.

Welcome to NAMM 2009!

This year's NAMM kicked off Today to large crowds and an endless sea of recording gear, instruments, and software. Companies like Serato, Ableton, Stanton, Numark, Akai, Bias and Presonus were all showing off their latest offerings. I was there to cover the Trade show for Remixin. There will be lots of photos and videos coming over the next few days.

Free Mashup Album from Stereogum

In case you haven't heard the latest Stereogum free album check out MySplice III. They mashup their favorite songs of the year into one big remix ball.

This is one of the cool ones of the bunch, "Debbie Does Montreal" (Blondie "Call me" vs of Montreal "Id Engager")

Blondie has been mashedup and remixed hundreds of time, but this one is worth a listen.
